Bali visa for Australians

Three things to sort before you fly: the e-Visa on Arrival, the free arrival card and the Bali tourist levy. Use official sites only — copycats charge more.

Checked November 2026. Rules change — always confirm on the official sites linked below.

Plan As soon as you decide

  1. Check your passport

Indonesia requires at least 6 months validity from the date you leave Indonesia, plus a blank page. Renew early — Australian passports can take weeks.

  2. Book flights

Compare direct flights to Denpasar (DPS) from Perth, Darwin, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

  3. Book your stay

Hotels and villas from our partners and 3M+ properties. Pick an area that suits your trip.

  4. Get travel insurance

Smartraveller strongly recommends it. Check it covers scooters (only with a valid licence), hospital and medical evacuation.

  6. Health & vaccines

See your GP 6–8 weeks before. Pack Bali-belly basics, insect repellent and any prescriptions in original packaging with a letter.

Before you go 1–2 weeks before

  1. Get your BaliMate eSIM

Data from the moment you land — no airport SIM queue. Install at home, switch on when you arrive.

  2. Book your airport pickup

A partner driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price, no haggling.

  3. Plan activities & restaurants

Tours, surf lessons, spas, beach clubs and dinners — request bookings with our partners.

  4. Sort money

Bring a travel card with no foreign fees. Use bank ATMs inside banks or malls. Only change cash at authorised changers (PT / BI-licensed) — never street stalls.

  5. Riding a scooter?

You need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement AND a motorbike licence at home, or your insurance is void and police can fine you. Always wear a helmet.

Final 72 hours Within 3 days of flying

  1. Apply for e-Visa on Arrival IDR 500,000

Australians need a visa: IDR 500,000 (~A$50) for 30 days, extendable once. Apply on the official site only — copycat sites charge much more.

  2. All Indonesia arrival card Free

Free. Complete within 72 hours before arrival — it covers immigration, customs and health. You get a QR code to show at the airport.

    Official site ↗
  3. Pay the Bali tourist levy IDR 150,000

IDR 150,000 (~A$15) per person, paid once per visit. Pay online before you fly and save the QR.

    Official site ↗
  4. Save your QR codes offline

Screenshot your e-VOA, arrival card and levy QR codes, plus booking confirmations. Airport Wi-Fi is unreliable.

  5. Pack smart

Sarong for temples, reef-safe sunscreen, power adapter (Type C/F, 230V), small notes for tips. Don’t pack drugs of any kind — penalties include death.

Arrival day Landing in Bali

  1. Landing at Denpasar (DPS)

Turn on your eSIM and Data Roaming for that line. Use the autogates if eligible, show your QR codes, collect bags, then customs.

  2. Meet your driver

Exit to the arrivals hall and look for your name sign. Ignore touts offering taxis inside the terminal.

  3. Check in & share your location

Turn on family location sharing so everyone knows you arrived safely.

In Bali During your stay

  1. Speak a little Bahasa

Terima kasih (thank you) goes a long way. Use the translator for menus and signs.

  2. Temples & etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees, wear a sarong at temples, don’t step on offerings (canang sari), and don’t touch heads. Nyepi (Day of Silence, March) closes the whole island including the airport for 24 hours.

  3. Stay safe

Drink bottled water, avoid arak/unbranded spirits (methanol poisoning), watch for monkeys at Uluwatu, swim between flags. SOS and hospitals are one tap away.

  4. Staying longer than 30 days?

Extend your VOA online once for another 30 days before it expires. Overstaying costs IDR 1,000,000 per day.

Heading home Last days

  1. Book your airport drop-off

Allow plenty of time — traffic to the airport can take 1–2 hours from Canggu or Ubud.

  2. Check out & review

Leave reviews for partners you used — it helps other Aussies and earns you trip credit.

  3. Coming home to Australia

Declare food, plant, animal and wooden items. Clean shoes and gear that touched farms or soil (foot-and-mouth disease risk). Duty-free: 2.25L alcohol and 25 cigarettes/25g tobacco per adult.
